MINI Boundary Layer Mast (MBLM) ~ cost = 25 lakhs

Earth’s atmosphere is an ocean of air, hundreds of kilometers thick, which protects life from the sun’s intense heat and dangerous radiation. The behavior of the atmosphere is quite complex. In fact, every day we all make decisions which are somehow influenced by the weather.

Weather and climate are global phenomena. Winds, solar radiation and various activities that take place on the earth affect the weather and cause long term changes in the climate. So studies related to weather and climate are of utmost importance.

This demands a number of observational centers and a strong database. Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has taken up this challenging task. ISRO has set up a large number of automatic weather stations (AWS) across the country.

PRWONAM (Prediction of Regional Weather with Observational Meso-Network and Atmospheric Modeling) is a unique project of ISRO under which 28 stations of Mini Boundary Layer Mast (MBLM) are proposed to be established.

We are fortunate enough to get one MBLM center established by ISRO at VBIT.

The system (MBLM) shall be useful to study the boundary layer process at fine scale. All the data are collected at one second resolution and averaged for every four minutes. The averaged data is sent to a receiving station at ISRO HQ, Bangalore via SMS using a GSM mobile connection.

The system uses advanced high resolution sensors to measure ambient temperature, relative humidity and wind vector at three different levels at 4.0 m, 8.0 m and 14.9 m. In addition to this it will measure rainfall (using a tipping bucket having resolution of 0.5 mm), net incoming solar radiation in long wave and short wave range, atmospheric pressure, soil temperature at seven levels and soil moisture at six levels.

WIND POWER UNIT in College Premises

Department of Mechanical Engineering established

To encourage the students of Engineering towards and inter discipline project the Department of Mechanical Engineering established Wind Power Unit on our College Premises.  The Project consists of 3 groups Mechanical – (Structure and Blade), Electrical (Generator) Electronics (speed Control Circuit Design).  Around 20 students from these branches of engineering are a part of this Project under the able guidance of Mr. K.B.V.Rao the prime objective of this Project is to enhance the technical and research skills of the young engineers.  Thus it also enriches their confidence levels the Project presently generates the Power of 500 watts from Wind as a source of energy which can also be utilized at a later stage towards the Power supply of the College too.
